35 New Year's Eve Movies to Watch Before the Ball Drops
Going out is so overrated.
Castle Rock Entertainment
After a long year, and with the Omicron variant still lingering over December festivities, if there were ever a New Year's Eve to opt out of the crowds, parties and germ-swapping kisses, it's this one. But even if you want to keep it low-key this year (or possibly every year), it doesn't mean there isn't any end-of-year fun to be had. There are still plenty of quiet New Year's traditions to partake in, including the resolutions, the good-luck foods — best of all — TV and movie ultra-marathons. Because the best way to celebrate is to watch other people going to packed-in New Year's parties on your behalf, while you sit in your PJs under a cozy blanket.
So, as 2021 becomes 2022, what are the best New Year's Eve movies to watch? The holiday is a perfect backdrop for the best romantic comedies, since many get that ultra-dramatic kiss at midnight. But if you're tired of all the treacle leftover from Christmas movies, you could do a 360° and settle into a New Year's dystopia or horror movie (and begin 2022 happy that you're not evading any slashers). Or, you could just watch a really great film that just so happens to have a pivotal scene set at New Year's. Whatever you choose, you'll be starting the year off on the right foot.

Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne (2021)
Here's one you haven't watched a million times already, considering it debuts on December 10, 2021. This special is only available on Apple TV+ (which also has the 1986 classic, Happy New Year. Charlie Brown).

Based on characters by Dashiell Hammett, the pair play a married couple who think they're in for a tiresome New Year's Eve, and wind up solving a mystery in their signature witty style instead.

Carol (2015)
This Oscar-nominated romantic film starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara follows two women from two completely different worlds who fall in love in the 1950s — and their first kiss happens at New Year's Eve (because there's no better time for a first kiss, obviously).

Boogie Nights (1997)
If you're looking for an adult — really, adult — film to watch on New Year's Eve, director Paul Thomas Anderson's look at the porn industry is certainly gripping, and events kick off during an unforgettable (though not at all happy) New Year's party. It's hard to believe this is from the same director as the elegant Phantom Thread.

Snowpiercer (2013)
Instead of 2022, jump forward to the not-too-distant, dystopian year 2031. Strange Days (1995)
Here's another one for people looking for a less-than-magical NYE story: Strange Days takes place not just at the end of the year — it takes place at the end of a millennium, and has all that Y2k paranoia that goes with it. In it, Ralph Feinnes plays an ex-cop who sells virtual reality experiences made from real, recorded memories. When he gets something that might be a snuff film, he starts to investigate if it's real. Director Katheryn Bigelow made the movie in the mid-90s, but some of what she predicted about "the future" is stunningly true today.

If the kids have a newfound appreciation for bustin' after Ghostbusters: Afterlife, show them this New Year's Eve-friendly entry in the franchise. Highball (1997)
Here, you see a group of friends who meet at three different parties: a Halloween costume party, a birthday bash and a New Year's Eve get-together. You have to infer from the dialogue what's happened in their personal lives between these gatherings, so it almost feels like a three-act play. It's a very early film from writer/director Noah Baumbach, who later would get an Oscar nomination for The Squid and the Whale.
